Obesity is an abnormal increase in body fat mass due to excessive calorie intake. Obesity Surgery; These are surgeries performed to help us lose weight. 

There are many types of surgery. However, the most common surgery performed today is Sleeve Gastrectomy, popularly known as TUBE STOMACH SURGERY. Approximately 80% of obesity surgeries in the world are sleeve gastrectomy surgeries. Surgery is never the first choice. Obesity surgery can be applied in cases where successful results cannot be obtained in obesity patients after diet, exercise and drug therapy.


For whom is obesity surgery suitable?
Obesity surgery method is suitable for people who have applied all other treatment methods before the surgical procedure but have not been successful. The patient should be evaluated with all relevant units before the surgical procedure and should be suitable for surgery in terms of anaesthesia. Patient selection is based on body mass index (BMI).  

If the body mass index (BMI) is over 40, the patient can be operated.
If the VKI (body mass index) is between 35 and 40 and the patient has an additional disease (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea syndrome, high triglyceride levels, heart disease, hypoventilation syndrome, fatty liver), the patient can be operated,
If the VKI (Body Mass Index) is between 30 and 35, surgery may be recommended for Type 2 Diabetes patients whose blood sugar cannot be controlled with medical treatments.
The most commonly used method to determine the degree of obesity is body mass index. 

According to the American Institute of Health, how is obesity calculated with BMI?
It is obtained by dividing the person's weight (in kg) by the square of his/her height (in metres).

20 - 24.9 is normal
25 - 29.9 is overweight
30 - 34.9 is obese
35 - 39.5 is type II obese
40 - 49.9 is morbidly obese
50 and above is considered super obese.
METHODS USED IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY
With the developing technology, there are various surgical techniques used in obesity. The choice of surgery is decided by the physician and the patient together according to the condition of the patient.

ENDOSCOPIC METHODS: 
1-STOMACH BALLOON: It is a method applied with non-surgical endoscopy under sedation, that is, by putting the patient to sleep. The balloon is placed in the stomach for 6 months-1 year The balloon stays in the stomach and creates a volume effect. It is 50-60% effective in weight loss. It can be applied to people with a body mass index between 27-35 or super mrbid obese people with a body mass index over 50 to minimise the risk of surgery before surgery.

2-STOMACH BOTOX APPLICATION: Botox injection is made into various parts of the stomach. 40-50% effective. It can also be performed on people with a body mass index between 27-35.
