Neonatal Intensive Care

Neonatal Intensive Care

Neonatal Intensive Care
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the place where babies born in risky deliveries are brought back to life. This unit is equipped with special devices such as special incubators, transport incubators, ventilators, special care beds and phototherapy devices.

In this centre, the experienced physician staff of Yüzyıl Hospital, who are experts in their fields, provide life support to newborn problematic babies who need special care with advanced technological equipment. Due to the nature of the service provided, the Intensive Care Unit has a 24-hour uninterrupted working programme.

Yüzyıl Hospital takes care to provide vital newborn intensive care services in the most modern and economical facilities.

The importance of the newborn period
Starting life with a healthy breath is considered the first step to a healthy life. But unfortunately, not every baby born can have this chance. Due to various factors, some babies are born with risks. Their survival is only possible with special care. Especially the newborn period is of great importance in this respect.

The period covering the first 28 days of the baby's life after birth is accepted as the "newborn period". Problems that may arise during this period play an important role in infant mortality. According to statistics, half of the child deaths in our country are newborn infant deaths. For this reason, risky pregnancies that carry the risk of premature birth should definitely be followed up in centres with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

In addition to this unit, Yüzyıl Hospital offers a safe birth environment in terms of both infant and maternal health, as it is a fully-fledged and technologically advanced health institution.

Function of the Newborn Intensive Care Centre

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit has a life-saving feature. As a requirement of this feature, babies whose lives are under threat are taken under care here. Risky babies include those born prematurely and with low weight, and those with hereditary health problems. The Intensive Care Unit has an important function in the survival of problematic babies who are at risk of death under natural conditions.

According to statistics, one out of every 10 pregnancies in the world results in premature birth. The gestation period for normal birth is accepted as 40 weeks. Births that occur one or two weeks before this period are considered premature births. It is accepted that 38 weeks should normally pass in a healthy pregnancy in order for the baby to fully develop all organs in the womb.

Babies born before 37 weeks of gestation, i.e. before completing the required time in the womb, can develop serious problems because their respiratory, digestive, nervous systems and other organs are incomplete. These babies may need to be kept in Neonatal Intensive Care Units where they are monitored for 24 hours and given life support.

Care in incubators

The incubator is considered the basic element of neonatal intensive care units. Newborn babies are taken under care in these incubators. The incubator creates an environment similar to the mother's womb. In the incubator, babies are heated as in the womb and protected from infections. Thanks to ventilators, which are advanced technology products that help babies with inadequate respiration to breathe, babies born before their lungs mature have a better chance of survival.

Vital functions such as respiration, heart rate and body temperature of babies in incubators are monitored 24 hours a day.

Mothers who give birth at risk can frequently visit their babies under care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in appropriate clothes and help them feed. Mothers are admitted to the intensive care room in appropriate clothes. Maternal support during the intensive care process positively affects the development of babies

Our basic philosophy is "Patient Satisfaction"

Yüzyıl Hospital's Newborn Intensive Care Unit offers 24-hour monitoring, mobile X-ray and ultrasonography, as well as periodic consultations from sub-departments such as neurology, cardiology, haematology and paediatric surgery.

Yüzyıl Hospital has the identity of "Baby Friendly Hospital". Adopting working principles in accordance with this identity, all babies born at Yüzyıl Hospital are screened for phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism.  Babies who are found to be ill are treated.

These diseases cause mental retardation if not diagnosed on time. The risk of mental retardation is eliminated by screening.
